Home Theater setups try to produce in your home the audio and visual experience you might have in a modern indoor big screen movie theater, only instead of sitting with a hundred strangers, you sit only with your family and friends and you are in control of the movie.
The basic components of a home theater system are the video, receiver, speakers, and source. A home theater system is nothing more than a set of individual electronic components working together. There are various levels of gear and budgets go from small to very large depending on how extensive you want your setup to be.
Home Theater components consist of a TV display, usually a big screen flat panel plasma or LCD ( a 50 inch flat panel display is very impressive and can get close to a theater experience), a video source, usually a DVD player or High Definition TV signal like HD cable TV or HD satellite TV and the audio which consists of typically 6 surround loudspeakers and a audio processor/decoder with amplifier. You can also get a all-in-one setup or home-theater-in-a-box which has all the speakers, amp, DVD player etc. and you then just need a TV.
Beyond the electronic gear, some people spend even more for the furnishings and even a dedicated room with multi-level seating. You can get as fancy as your budget will allow. In the most basic form however, you should have a decent TV display, a DVD player and the surround sound components.
Surround sound adds the realism intended by the movie producers. It puts you in the middle of the action. Most DVD movies contain Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound. Many TV broadcasts also have DD 5.1 sound. You need a Audio/Video Receiver with DD 5.1 decoding and six speakers surrounding you.
You also need the connection cables to hookup all your gear.
