| My digital cable box has a HDMI output and an optical audio output. Which one do I use for Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound? |

| The HDMI standard is fully capable of handling Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound, however each electronics manufacturer determines the parameters for what is to be transferred via HDMI in their components. Today you will typically use the optical audio output and route to a A/V receiver for processing and output to loudspeakers. Future digital cable boxes may allow the HDMI output to be used as it certainly has the potential. |
